Synthesis of Novel SiO2/CuFe2O4/polyaniline Nano-composite for the Adsorption of Fe(II), Mn(II) and Cu(II) from Groundwater

Abstract

Groundwater is a valuable water source; unfortunately, from the last few decades, groundwater day by day contaminated due to uncontrolled anthropogenic activities. For the treatment of contaminated groundwater, the adsorption with modified nanocomposite adsorbent is most promising method. A novel, functionalized SiO2/CuFe2O4/polyaniline (SiO2/CuFe2O4/PANI) composite was synthesized, characterized and applied for adsorption of Fe(II), Mn(II) and Cu(II) from groundwater. The synthesized adsorbent was investigated for the adsorption of studied metal ions in both single and binary solution in a batch process. Different factors affecting the adsorption process were investigated and found that Fe(II), Mn(II) and Cu(II) adsorption was highly dependent on the solution pH, temperature and contact time. The experimental results revealed that ̴ 78%, ̴ 43% and ̴ 42% of Fe(II), Cu(II) and Mn(II) ions was extracted from groundwater sample onto SiO2/CuFe2O4/PANI within 5 hours (300 min.) respectively. Moreover, the synthesized adsorbent was also evaluated for the adsorption of synthetic Fe(II), Mn(II) and Cu(II) ions solution at optimum operating factors and found that adsorption capacities of Fe(II) was 320 mg/g, Mn(II) was 296 mg/g, and Cu(II) was 176 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters showed the adsorption of Fe(II), Mn(II) and Cu(II) onto adsorbent were spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Desorption study showed that the adsorbent is an excellent renewable material also potential for further use for water decontamination. Therefore, the SiO2/CuFe2O4/PANI is considered and recommended as promising adsorbent for metal ions adsorption.
