Globalization and Nostalgia in Iran

Abstract

Culture is one of the important dimensions of globalization, and globalization is accompanied by an increasing awareness of cultural diversity. The process of globalization may have the result of weakening or marginalizing the indigenous culture of a country or ethnic group. In this process, the issue of nostalgia is relevant. Nostalgia can be a feeling about people, art, architecture, or customs of period passed. Even though the process of globalization provides a new and diverse culture, people want to rebuild phenomena of the past, and return to old styles which they feel attached to. This research identifies phenomena that people in Iran feel nostalgic about. The research method used for this paper is a qualitative approach comprising in-depth interviews and thematic analysis. It is hypothesised that the results will show that in the process of globalization, on the basis of nostalgia, people seek the culture and customs of the past. This can be seen in the establishment of old-fashioned restaurants, traditional architecture, and the remembrance of past customs.
