Media Framing and ‘Made in China 2025’ - Coverage of Sino-US relations in The Washington Post and The New York Times

Abstract

From the beginning of the twenty-first century, China’s economic progression seems a potential threat to global power, the USA. Due to the ideological differences between global economies, it is said by many renowned scholars that there is another cold war started between China and the USA. In May 2015 China announced its industrial strategy called ‘made in China 2025’ according to this strategy, China’s domestic content of core materials will be increased to 70%. This goal was considered as a risk to the USA and other industrial democracies. The relationship among the countries is an important factor in media framing as it covers the national and international events, which happened in various places in the world. Past studies have suggested that there is a major change expected in Sino-US relations based on industrial strategy ‘Made in China 2025’. The purpose of this research is to examine the framing of China in the American newspapers, The New York Times and The Washington Post. Content analysis of selected newspapers for one month, i.e. from 16th May to 14th June 2015, as research methodology will be carried out to observe the framing of China by the US press. Framing theory is a suitable theory to understand this research that how the USA is framing China in its newspapers. The expected findings are, that the US press is more concerned to portray China as a risk for itself and other major industrial democratic countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany.
