The Impact of Development Aid on Poverty in Recipient Countries

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of sources of development aid in order to compare the efficacy of each source. The donors analyzed in this study are: The International Monetary Fund, The World Bank Group, The United States, China, and The European Union. These aid sources were chosen because they donate the largest amount of aid in comparison to all other sources. The independent variable is the amount of aid given to recipient countries by donors; the dependent variable is the poverty rates in recipient countries. A nonlinear bivariate regression analysis is used in this study to analyze the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The importance of this study lies in its ability give us insights into relevant questions being considered in the realm of international and development studies, such as: What are the differences between the specific aid sources analyzed in this study? Do the donors specified in this study have a negative or positive impact on poverty levels in recipient countries? and which policies pursued by these aid sources seem to impact poverty in recipient countries? As various countries of the world develop, efforts to eradicate poverty may be sacrificed at the expense of economic growth. This study is particularly useful to political scientists in figuring out which donor policies are best for development without exacerbating poverty in developing nations.
