Colonialism and Slavery Policies in Nigeria’s Socio-Economic and Political Lifestyle: An Impact Assessment

Abstract

The strategic features of colonial politico-socio-economy of Nigeria were appraised in this study with particular considerations to some policies that have influenced the lifestyle of the people over time. The paper applied historical and contemporary review and analysis of colonial and post-colonial issues in Nigeria with an attempt to link British colonialism, contemporary Nigerian colonialism, and evident underdevelopment. Issues raised were the failed federal character policy which favors the northern region, the worrisome political lifestyle of recycling leaders, the colonial educational policy which today favors the south, and increasing poverty and social inequality which is a testimony of contemporary colonialism and slavery. The recommendations made bother around the need to introduce, update, and implement policies that would foster unity and lessen the socio-economic brunt on Nigerians.
