Workshop
Advocating for People with Disabilities: A Socio-environmental Challenge
Workshop Presentation De'Andrea Matthews
As we peruse Education and Learning in Worlds of Difference, it is important to discuss accessibility as a socio-environmental challenge. Disability is the one area that any of us could find ourselves in at any point in life, whether from an accident that causes a broken bone, a food allergy or mobility challenge due to growing older. How we view and interact with people with both visible and invisible disabilities has been framed by the social environment. In this session, we explore family influences, workplace influences, social class influences and national and international laws on the rights of persons with disabilities in order to be better advocates for inclusion.
