Strategic Planning for Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Ed

Abstract

Strategic planning for diversity and inclusion, when done right, sparks change simply from planning, builds consensus, and engages the entire community in the process. We present a model for strategic planning that integrates Implementation, is data driven, and focuses on ensuring shared responsibility for all employees. Join this interactive workshop as we walk you through the exercises and best practices that we employed during our D&I Strategic Planning Process. Participants will: 1) Learn about institutional best practices for D&I in higher ed through a practice self-assessment, 2) Practice using many of the important tools for strategic planning, such as facilitation, RACI, Prioritization matrices, 3) Create an outline for a D&I strategic planning process at their institution, and 4) Practice articulating the business case to leadership and stakeholders. This process can be used within smaller groups, such as academic departments, research groups, and nonacademic units.
