Abstract
This paper provides those working with members of diverse communities, families, and organisations with some theoretical and practical ideas for making members feel accepted and comfortable in these contexts. By briefly reviewing some theories from the field of children’s literature and surveying some of the books written specifically for children which embrace some of the very complex aspects of displacement, seeking refuge, and building new lives in new communities. The paper proposes that using picture books with mixed age and mixed background groups who are grappling with these ideas will provide a strong position for discussion. Four books specifically from Australian children’s writers who depict both the journey, the settlement, and even the language learning are used within the study and some practical ways of discussion the images and words using both critical literacy and visual literacy are provided.
