Abstract
While multiple generations are represented in the modern hospitality workforce, age discrimination is one of the biggest issues the industry faces. Forward thinking hospitality organizations understand multigenerational teams result in a wider range of knowledge, experience, and ideas. As such, these companies strive to build cultures that respect, support and engage employees of all ages. From increased loyalty to greater competence and stronger leadership, professionalism, work ethic and people management skills, seniors can add tremendous value. Since the Bureau of Labor Statistics declares more than 25% of the hospitality workforce will be 55 or older by 2022, this study explores the critical role age plays in employment in this U.S. industry. We examine the unique benefits older employees bring to the workforce and explore strategies that hospitality companies can take to prepare for and maximally benefit from an aging workforce via the related literature.
