Diversifying Faculty in Higher Education: The Case for a Bona Fide Occupational Qualification for Race in Higher Education

Abstract

Higher education continues to suffer from lack of diversity within its faculty body especially within highly ranked positions. The scarcity in representation hinders the academy’s ability to meet its societal and educational goals. Due to the unique hiring and promotional systems of higher education, non-traditional approaches are needed to address this deficit. This paper articulates the argument for a Title VII bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) for race in the hiring of faculty as a feasible and effective tool for higher education institutions to diversify all ranks of their faculty and better serve their educational mission.
