Growing Up with Media Violence and Psychological Trauma among Youth in Pakistan

Abstract

In this digital age, the impact of media can be observed from all walks of life. Every media user is being influenced, youth particularly are the most significant population which in the ever-growing media is affected. One cannot deny the fact that the images that are being shown in the mainstream media are full of violence and conflict. With these impediments and multifaceted media platforms and its content, there is no escape from the violence, it is very much relevant in today’s world to understand that how does such violent content affect the individuals, particularly youth. The purpose of this study to explore the influence of violent media exposure on psychological trauma, i.e., desensitization and fear, aggressive behavior, sleep disturbance, anxiety, and stress among youth. The research approach for the current study is quantitative analysis. The survey was conducted at a national level from colleges and universities. The questionnaire was developed in such a way that it covers all the key variables involved in the research. The results demonstrated that the objectives of the study are accomplished and the hypothesis of the study is accepted in the current results, illustrating exposure to violence is considerably associated with psychological trauma. There is more influence of violent exposure on male respondents than females.
