Interdisciplinary Curricula Improving Population Health: Education and Collaborative Practice

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide key definitions and principles that guide us in identifying core interprofessional competencies in the public health field. The WHO Study Group on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice developed a global Framework for Action (WHO 2010) that shows the goal of interprofessional education as preparation of a “collaborative practice-ready” workforce, driven by grassroots level health needs and health systems designed to address those needs. During this work, we explain the three frameworks targeting interprofessional education as means of improving patient-centered and community-population-oriented care. There are four competency domains: Values/Ethics for interprofessional practice; role/responsibilities; interprofessional communication; teams and teamwork — which convergence into core interprofessional competencies. There are key challenges to the adoption and implementation of core interprofessional competencies - organizational, political, ethical, and legal-oriented. Certainly, the systematic education and closer interaction of health professionals in new ways can facilitate the cooperative endeavors to focusing on relationships among professions using community/population-oriented interventions. Recognize interprofessional practice as key to effectively addressing the social determinants of health. Health promotion and community health approach to improve population health by emphasizing the importance of interprofessional education as preparation of a “collaborative practice-ready” workforce, driven by grassroots level health needs and health systems designed to address those needs. We demonstrate effective strategies targeting interprofessional education as a means of improving patient-centered and community-population-oriented care.
