Women's Participation in Politics in Mexico: Changes and Power

Abstract

Women’s participation in politics in Mexico is still very small, limited by gender stereotyping, which minimizes and limits women’s capacities, as well as the political violence that has been generated against them, in some cases close to risk his life. To close the gender gap in this area, there have been several initiatives such as gender quotas. The demand for female inclusion in public life to make decisions and participate in social discussions is a natural consequence of women’s historic marginalization. This paper analyses the participation of women in positions of popular election at various levels in the elections 2018 in Mexico. To this end, a documentary analysis on feminist movements is presented in an international context, then the participation of women in politics is analyzed. Finally, gender quota is addressed and the process of women’s participation during the last elections in Guanajuato, which allows us to understand that the female representation has been variable and derived from the changes of power.
