By: Luis Reyes   Estefania Basurto   Miguel Camino Solorzano

Manta is a city located in the coastal region of Ecuador. During the past ten years, the destination has experienced an overwhelming economic and industry growth which have brought improvement of the quality of life of a considerable part of the population, but that has also brought cost. Industrial development has increased the process of acculturation, and ancestral knowledge of the community has been negatively affected. With the purpose to achieve the sustainability of the cultural resource of the destination an awareness campaign has been implemented, and studies have been conducted to identify strategies to increase the sense of belonging as a starting point to favor the preservation of the cultural resources. The present study adopted a qualitative approach through the consultation of experts in the field and has identified that tourism and gastronomy are keystones to increase the sense of belonging and identity in the city of Manta.
