Climate Variability Impact on Livelihood Dependence in Agriculture and Allied Sectors: A Comprehensive Review for Central India

Abstract

Climate variability continues to be a matter of global concern due to the challenges it poses in all economic development sectors. As a result of the different effects of climate change and variability, rural livelihood activities that directly depend on natural resources, such as agriculture, land, water, and forests, are adversely affected globally. Social, cultural, and economic threats emanating from climate change and variability have been reported in terms of reduced health, changes in food availability and food affordability, reduced labor, erosion of cultural norms and isolation from social functions, among other variables. Climate change affects health by enhancing water scarcity and reliance on unsafe water sources, including saline groundwater. Indian agriculture is considered especially vulnerable to warming temperatures in the coming decades, though not necessarily uniformly across the country. This paper examines the climate variability and its profound impact on livelihoods in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Madhya Pradesh is characterized by its diverse geography and agriculture dependent economy, making it highly susceptible to the effects of climate change. The paper utilizes a combination of empirical data, scientific literature, and local case studies to assess the relationship between climate variability and livelihoods in the region. It highlights the key challenges faced by various sectors and communities, explores the adaptive measures undertaken, and suggests strategies for building resilience in the face of climate change. It offers valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, to develop effective strategies and policies aimed at safeguarding livelihoods and promoting sustainable development in the state.
