Must Study Ice - the Antarctica and the Arctic: Two Poles, Two Different Disciplines, One Goal

Abstract

Founded after an art and science residency in Svalbard, Norway, in 2018, Women Artists in the Arctic, works to expand recognition of women’s contributions to art and the ever-changing Arctic. A curated exhibit of work was displayed at Espace des Femmes in Paris in 2021. Because Arctic artists often tie in science, pairing Arctic art and Antarctic science seemed a natural extension of the initial Arctic collaborations. Women have a different, often overlooked, perspective in both realms and have long been dismissed from the polar dialogues. The video, (YouTube link: Must Study Ice: Antarctica and the Arctic,) joins the North and South Poles and the worlds of art and science. The artists, women working in the Arctic, cross genres, cultures, and artistic goals. The women of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) embrace leadership through research and education globally. Bringing together boreal art and austral words offers a means of closing the gap between closely related but disparate pursuits introducing us to the tenuous ecological balance these women articulate.
