Abstract
This paper sheds some light on the notion of “sustainable design by default”, an inquiry into which transitions design practice as well as education need to go through in order to cater to the multiple crises we are faced with. Traditionally, designers have been associated less with contributing to solving the climate crisis, but rather with throwing fuel in the fire by way of making more products and more “things” people desire to purchase. This work hypothesizes about specific pathways into transforming design education in a way that the impact and trajectory of designed outputs can be more deliberately developed, considering the wicked problem of climate change and its sometimes overwhelming pressure for change.
