Perceptions and Determinants of Climate Change Adaptaion Among Farmers: An Analysis on the Selected Agro Ecological Zones of Kerala, India

Abstract

Agriculture plays a vital role in ensuring food security along with socio-economic development of a nation. However, in the recent years, climate change has become one of the most significant challenges faced by agriculture across the world. Based on primary data collected from 600 farm households of the major rice producing districts of three identified agroclimatic zones of Kerala, the study uses a multivariate probit model to study the socio- economic determinants of climate change adaptation strategies of rice farmers. The results of the multivariate probit model reveal that the farmers’ choice of adaptation strategies is significantly affected by socio-economic factors such age, gender, level of education, household size, dependency ratio, farm size, off-farm income experience, credit access, reliance on climate information, and access to agricultural extension services. The study further suggests that government policies towards better access to affordable credit would aid the farmer in adopting better adaptation strategies.
