Climate Change Adaptation among Low-Income Women in Anambra State: Prospects and Challenges

Abstract

Incessant usage of firewood in Anambra state has constantly hiked the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere, increasing global warming, causing escalating health and environmental risks as well as reduced agricultural yields in the environs. This has pushed the poor, particularly, low-income women beyond their coping capacity, endangering the attainment of MDGs 1 and 7. Climate change adaptation for these women requires transitioning to clean cooking energy sources such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or electric stove. Unfortunately, the low-income women in Anambra state insistently use firewood as the outrageous high cost of LPG and electricity for cooking in Nigeria is beyond their affordable capacity. Use of biogas has become a viable alternative since the feedstocks can easily be sourced from the local environment. However the use of biogas is yet to be adopted in Anambra state. This paper investigated the structural factors undermining the adaptation capacity of the low-income women in Anabra state. Three research questions guided the study. Multistage cluster sampling technique was adopted in selecting three local governments for the study. The instruments were interviews and questionnaires. Qualitative and quantitative data were analysed computer based. Political, Economic, Social and environmental factors were revealed as the undermining factors. State mediation, strengthening the clean cooking business ecosystem, investments in attitudinal changes, the establishment of institutional homes and unified leadership for clean cooking were proposed prospects. The study implies that to stimulate the attainment of MDG 1 and 7 in Anambra state, a combination of efforts is required.
