Environmental Risk Assessment of Lead, Copper, Zinc, and Chromium in Duste Abbatoir Dump Site, Jugawa, Nigeria

Abstract

The evidence of the presence of high level of heavy metals in municipal waste dumpsite necessitate investigation of some of the most common toxic chemical pollutants (Lead, Copper, Zinc, and Copper) in Duste Abattoir dumpsite. This research studies the rnvironmental risk assessment of Lead, Copper, Zinc, and Chromium in Duste Abbatoir Dump site. The samples were taken from the dump waste site of the Abattoir in Duste, Jigawa State. The results revealed that the studied locations are at risk of heavy metals contamination and the order of risk could be described as follow: Pb>Cu>Zn, where Cr has less impact on the environment. The examined pollution indices indicated that all the locations are polluted with Pb and Cu followed by Zn. OC and pH had a positive but significant correlation with both CrL and ZnL, respectively. It is, therefore, suggested that there is need for regular surveillance of the dump depose at the abattoir in order to regulate and enhance the quality of the surrounding environment and resident protection especially children, from heavy metal pollution in the area. It is also suggested to decontaminate the abattoir waste matter before use for agricultural purposes.
