Enhancing Urban Identity through a Framework for Analyzing Cultural Landscape: A Case Study of Ha Thanh Riverside Landscape, Quy Nhon city - Central Region - Vietnam

Abstract

Urban identity is the result of a complex interplay between intangible (customs, culture, and society) and tangible (topography, climate, and landscape) aspects that together define a location and give it its distinctive features. Urban architecture, particularly the traditional urban areas, is increasingly disappearing due to the tendency of urbanization and globalization integration as well as the impact of modern architecture from other nations being imported into Vietnam. With today’s economic and societal issues, choosing to build and maintain one’s identity is always a challenging decision. Therefore, it is essential that urban identity grow harmoniously during the planning and design process. In order to rebuild and improve landscape architecture during the urban development process, the study attempts to establish a framework for studying the cultural landscape. To reproduce the scenery of the Ha Thanh river in Dieu Tri area, Quy Nhon city, Central region, Vietnam, through survey and evaluation of local cultural values. The investigation identifies several concrete and abstract qualities that must be replicated in urban public places. As a result, the study area’s preliminary design is seen as a place with numerous traditional cultural and landscape characteristics in the Ha Thanh riverbank area, while also building a spatial connection between the area and the Quy Nhon old urban area.
