Scaling Up Nature Based Solutions in Community Led Conservation Leadership for Large Scale Ecological Restoration: Enhancing Nature's Health

Abstract

The study is based on a project which aims at contributing to biodiversity protection through implementing Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) underpinning forest protection and community land rights in Cameroon. Specifically, the project supports zero deforestation agricultural production (cocoa, cassava and plantains) of small and medium-sized farms and the related value chains as well as the technical capacities of farmers, including youth and women and resilience to climate change; documents, elaborates and supports the implementation of community participatory mapping and land use plans integrating biodiversity footprint restoration opportunities, involving the city of Douala in their food supply chains while taking into account the management of natural resources; supports the establishment of multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary community, council and Regional Land Observatories; raises awareness and builds capacities of all communities and stakeholders (civil society, journalist, councils, etc) on land consultations. It emphasizes free prior and informed consent (FPIC), element of land related governance, overcoming conflicting land uses and claims, and structured systems as described by the legal framework of Cameroon and restoration of degraded landscapes using restoration opportunities assessment methodology (ROAM) to identify degraded land and the opportunities available at local and national levels. It uses result from ROAM to support the council and communities to create and manage tree nursery; supports council and communities to carryout restoration actions in identified degraded areas using enrichment-planting approach, agroforestry, and assisted natural regeneration, with focus on high-value native economic species with rigorous monitoring of plant growth and results of growth rate documented across levels.
