Abstract
An environmental impact assessment (EIA) in regard to River Ganga was carried out at Gangotri in Uttarakhand. The bed load transport measured during various seasons was compared to theoretical estimation using various bed load transport theories. The study of River Ganga observed bedload consisted of particles in the size category of 0.5 mm to more than 45 mm. The average size of bedload particles of 26 mm and above was 64% of total sample material, suspended particles with diameters less than 0.1 mm were found to be average 28% of entire sample material, particles above 45 mm diameter were approximately 8%. These were observations during average flows; however, bedload at times of high flow included large particles, including rock content and big boulders. Recking’s formula was found most befitting the experimental results.
