The Impact of Climate Change on Sustainable Livelihoods: Case Study of Lake Chad Watershed Communities of the Far North Region of Cameroon

Abstract

Today, the negative effects of climate change are now glaringly compounding in every region of the globe bringing with it dangerous extreme events bearing serious environmental and livelihoods consequences worldwide - notably, the rapid degradation of the natural environment, the unprecedented degeneration of ecosystems and the immense loss of biodiversity. A good example is the depletion of fresh / environmental water resources worldwide now a reality in many communities in Africa especially in countries located within the Sahel Region. A typical scenario of this case is being revealed in the watershed communities of the Far Northern Region of Cameroon as it is likewise across most communities within the Lake Chad Basin. Primary data was gotten from field survey which employed the use of observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and in-depth group discussions underpinned by the sustainable livelihoods approach theoretical baseline, an analysis was conducted to assess the people’s assertion of climate change realities in their communities, how it affects their livelihoods and how they can overcome the challenges. Secondary data was also used to conceptualize and explore how climate change impacts fresh water resources and livelihoods within the Lake Chad Basin. Key findings reveal that for these communities, climate change is evident today by an upsurge of weather variability leading to recurrent extreme events especially of droughts and flooding that has shrunk by more than 90% the waters of the Lake Chad causing severe constrains on livelihoods. We suggest a New Environmental Livelihoods Framework to help overcome the challenges.
