Mitigating Climate Change with Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Methods: Bringing Old Tools Forward to Construct a Healthy Future

Abstract

As an indigenous woman who grew up on her homelands, my entire life has been lessons of science and economics in relation to our ways of life. As a harvester and artist in all mediums of my traditional art, I have been studying the climate and its impacts from changes daily. In the professional realm I have been involved with tribal politics for close to two decades and sit on many conservation group boards, Native corporation boards, and sit on steering committees for collective impact networks that are geared toward making shifts that create sustainable localized economic success. Currently I am on a successful route to restore protections on 10 million acres of America’s largest old growth forest and in the process create a regenerative economy that makes profit off of habitat restoration and responsible land and resource use. Much of my work includes traditional knowledge, research through citizens science projects, and ways to navigate policy in the favor of climate and community no matter the political climate.
