A Sociological Study on Social-economic Impact of Climate Change among Metropolitan Women Waste Pickers in South Asia.

Abstract

The study aims to explore how climate change generates different types of socio-economic vulnerabilities particularly health risks and what are the crucial factors of health risks among women waste pickers in a metropolitan city based on the narrative framework. The study targets the women waste pickers community in Dhaka City. Historically, socioeconomic, and political situations have been shaped by post-colonial rituals along with religious beliefs, and non-liberal thoughts in South Asia. The socio-economic and local political situations generate an unhealthy and oppressed culture among marginalized communities, especially in metropolitan cities. The social life and livelihood of women waste pickers are growing up in a social context shaped by social organizations and institutions. This study goes beyond how urban authorities deal with the risks among the waste pickers community during climate emergencies and how to build a community climate resilience. And what are the constraints for the lack of access to health care services for them during emergencies The study employs qualitative research methods such as twenty semi-structured interviews of women waste pickers, five key-informant interviews (KIIs) of municipal officials to demonstrate the narrative analysis of the context of social constructionism. The results promote understanding of the socio-economic and cultural impact of climate change, which seems to be responsible for different types of health risks among women waste pickers in densely populated megalopolises in developing countries.
