Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic on SDG 7.A.1 Using the Framework of the Economics of Disaster and Climate Change: Implications for Sub-Saharan African Economies

Abstract

The energy goal of the 2015 United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development contained in the seventh goal (SDG 7) of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable modern energy for all by 2030. Among the indicator targets for SDG7 is SDG7. A.1.The SDG7A.1. calls for international public finance to developing countries to scale up renewable energy technology development and building resilience energy infrastructure systems. Like all the 17 SDGs, the SDG7 A.1. was conceived as ex ante the of COVID-19 global health pandemic realities, and its interactions with the world’s political, economic, environment and geopolitical systems. Using the framework of Economic of Disaster and Climate Change, the purpose of this study is to qualitatively and quantitively analyse the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the SDG 7.A.1, and drawing short-medium-long term renewable energy development implications for sub-Saharan African economies.
