Strategic Storytelling - an Invitation to Design a Future of Our Own Making: Aligning Enterprise Aims with the Global Goals - a Practice Field and Collaboration Platform

Abstract

Our study addresses both the science of and the social response to climate change. The science is now clear. But few leaders are clear on how to respond in their positional roles using the power of enterprise innovation. Enabling leaders to imagine how to use their positional authority and innovation resources to address the crisis of climate and equity is the next step in leadership development. Theory is not enough. Instruction about the issues will not reform behavior reinforced by a scaffolding of social systems. Leaders in this second decade of the 21st century will face both the crisis of climate and the crisis of equity. Each will have its impact on the future of enterprise and our world. They are inextricably interrelated and complex. Storytelling is one method that can enable us to design creative responses to deep interrelatedness and complexity. We explore the use of strategic storytelling in the form of a simulated practice field. We describe a process of active storytelling and demonstrate how to use it to enable leaders to manage both transformational change and transition risk. Entering the story and embodying its design is critical to deepening our understanding of and commitment to addressing the challenges we face. We also explore how to use this practice field to build a platform of life-centered innovation and collaboration across sectors and boundaries that can enable leaders to align enterprise aims to address the challenge of climate and equity and meet the Global Goals.
