The Information Gap in Published Materials from Non-governmental Organisations in the Realm of Violence Against Men and Boys in Zimbabwe

Abstract

The researchers consider gender based violence (GBV) against men informed by the realization that most of the articles being published and the information accessible is largely to do with gender based violence against women. The problem is Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) should produce documents for both genders but not much is seen on men and boys. NGOs have come up with ways to spread information on the issue of GBV, however, lacking are the publications to do with GBV against men and boys. The purpose of this study was to investigate why there is an information gap of published materials on GBV against men and boys as compared to that of women by NGOs in the realm of gender in Zimbabwe. The study employed the qualitative approach and used a case study design. Interviews and document analysis were the data collection instruments. The results showed that there is a gap as NGOs are not publishing enough documents with information about violence against men and boys. This has largely been attributed to men not speaking out as much as women and cultural norms. The researchers concluded that NGOs are not producing enough information on GBV against men boys and that the little that is there is difficult to access because most of publications are stored at the offices. Recommendations were that NGOs should do more awareness and offer programs to communities to encourage them to speak out.
