The Evolution of Korean Wave in the Philippines: Limitations and Challenges

Abstract

While South Korea and the Philippines already have an existing political, economic, and social partnership that sprung up during the North and South Korean War in the 50s, these relationships and exchanges of economic and human capital developed and flourished in the early 90s or so. The Philippines was the first Asian country to support South Korea from its war with North Korea in the 50s and the first Asian country to welcome the Korean Wave in the 90s. With the increasing Korean population in the Philippines through the burgeoning numbers of Korean businesses, schools, missionaries, and English students intertwined in the hospitable and accommodating culture of the Filipinos, these factors set the context of the Korean Wave in the 90s to be highly fantasized and patronized by many Filipinos (Meinardus, 2005, n.p.). But what are the positive impacts, limitations, and challenges confronting the globalization of Hallyu especially so in the Philippines? Examining the current pieces of literature, soap operas and dramas, and songs, we find positive and negative attractions that call for innovations for the creative evolution of such culture in the globalized world.
