Mongolian Street Art: An Expression of Culture and Customs

Abstract

Street art in Mongolia has a long and storied history, dating back to ancient civilizations. The history of Mongolian murals or street art is directly related to the time when people lived in caves. These cultures used murals to convey stories, beliefs, and traditions. With the beginning of the 20th century, Mongolians, who had a nomadic lifestyle, became urbanized, and along with this, a variety of urban cultures began to develop. Until the 1990s, Mongolian street art was developed under strict supervision and only through propaganda. Recently, it has been recognized that street art is an independent art form, an expression of human self-expression, and urban culture. We located 41 examples of street art in Ulaanbaatar and analyzed their content. In this paper, we explore the captivating world of Mongolian street art, delving into its history, its significance, and the artists who have transformed urban landscapes into dynamic works of art.
