Innovative Methods in Architectural Education: Harnessing the Power of Arts-based Pedagogies for Design Learning

Abstract

This research investigates the advantages and effectiveness of incorporating arts-based pedagogies into architectural education frameworks. It investigates how various creative expressions, such as visual arts, performing arts, and literature, may enrich the learning experience and develop creativity in architecture students. Drawing on current practices and theoretical underpinnings in architectural pedagogy, the research identifies essential concepts and methodologies for smoothly incorporating arts-based approaches into design learning processes. It seeks to get a more nuanced knowledge of how arts-based pedagogies contribute to overall student progress by combining insights from educational psychology and arts education. The study focuses on a fundamental design course for first-year students at Nuh Naci Yazgan University’s Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department, and it makes context-specific suggestions for this educational setting. The study uses a mixed-methods research strategy that includes qualitative methods like questionnaires, observation, and case studies as well as quantitative analyses to completely examine the influence of arts-based pedagogies on student learning. The project analyzes the practical obstacles and opportunities connected with incorporating arts-based pedagogies into architectural curriculum, focusing on student involvement, critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and design outcomes. Identifying best practices and successful tactics, provides educators, curriculum authors, and policymakers with practical insights for improving future architects’ educational experiences. Finally, the research seeks to improve architecture education by making evidence-based recommendations and insights to inform instructional methods and curriculum development. It enables educators and organizations to construct dynamic learning environments that foster the creativity, critical thinking abilities, and overall professional development of aspiring architects.
