Young Artists in Ho Chi Minh City: Local Influence in the Process of Embracing Contemporary Art

Abstract

The art of painting in Ho Chi Minh City has seen robust development since Vietnam’s opening to international integration. Amidst globalization and modernization, many young artists in Ho Chi Minh City have held successful exhibitions, earning recognition both nationally and internationally in the professional and public spheres. These artists, with their open mindset and quick adoption of new artistic trends from contemporary artists worldwide, have rapidly established their own unique creative directions. Despite continuously refreshing their creative thinking and artistic practice, many emblematic young artists in Ho Chi Minh City still emphasize local influences in their works. This study analyzes the concept of local elements and their manifestations in the art of painting, identifying these elements in the works of some young artists in Ho Chi Minh City. This process of identification also reveals that many young creators in the contemporary painting scene of Ho Chi Minh City, amidst cultural exchanges and adaptations with global art, endeavor to find a distinctive local identity in their artistic works.
