Abstract
Jungian archetypal theory’s open-endedness and purposefulness provide an appropriate avenue of interpretation for the study of Rothko’s paintings. The archetype of the persona is addressed in Rothko’s 1959 work Red on Maroon by applying Jungian archetypal theory to his quest for the vitality of painting, assuming the perspective of the creator and investigating how the artist as alchemist conveys the symbolic art of the common human heart.
