Experimental Illustration Production With Found Objects: Art Theory in the Context of Visual Communication

Abstract

Found objects make different readings possible by detaching them from the conditions in which they exist and by articulating them, producing new texts, almost like words that come together. In the experimental illustrations produced with these objects, physical materials turn into a new meaning that transcends their own meanings. At this point, symbolic narratives carried by objects that extend to the origins of the designer’s personality are inevitable. Considering the intricate structure of the found objects, it can be said that they are positioned as fixed but dynamic elements if there is a meaningful place. A tangible collection of heterogeneous materials is presented, with their relationships in motion and new possibilities of meaning. The production of illustrations with found objects can be carried out with all human-made or natural objects that are provided by the artist or that the artist has stored, accumulated due to his inner interest. At this point, the designer’s choice should be seen as a creative action. Objects that are repositioned as illustrative elements lose their usefulness functions and become objects of art and design. With such an attempt towards everyday and ordinary objects, it makes a journey towards the conceptual field. In this journey practice, methods such as accumulation (collection), decolage, collage, and assembly accompany the plastic narrative.
