The End of the Decisive Moment: Online Teaching in Photography Education

Abstract

Higher education in the fields of design and the arts has changed in recent years, advancing in new methodologies and pedagogical approaches. However, perhaps an even more important challenge remains for photography education, breaking down the spatial and temporal barriers. In a global world, it does not make sense that the learning of photography continues to be limited to the “decisive moment”: to learn in a specific space at a specific moment with a specific teacher. Today’s students must grow professionally in a global and constantly changing environment, and learning models must adapt and update to that environment. Online methodologies allow not only an experiential learning model based on practice, but are also based on innovative learning systems that promote active and collaborative learning, combining diverse methodologies in which students are the core of learning processes and promote transversal work methods to train the new generation of photographers in the context of the digital society.
