How University Museums Build Social Capital for Sustainable Community Relationships: Best Practices for Successful Partnerships Between University-affiliated Museums in Inreach and Outreach Programs

Abstract

This research follows a mixed methods approach to investigate how American university museums pursue community outreach programs in order to identify best practices that guide successful community partnerships. A sequential exploratory strategy analyzes museum association listserv discussions through content analysis, followed by interviews and a survey of practitioners. Integrated results provide details on best practices to increase social capital in the community as well as value creation for the university-affiliated museum. This study adds to the knowledge of managing the value of university museums.
