Islands in Fiction

Abstract

Islands are many things to many people. They are places of mystery and isolation. They can be a romantic refuge from the world or a prison keeping one from it. Islands have always been a source of fascination. This is evidenced by the abundance of art created on this topic throughout history. In this study, I discuss several prominent literary examples and how they treat the concept of The Island. I also look at some possible explanations of why islands transfix us. Maybe no man is an island, but we’re drawn to the idea nonetheless.
