Global Performative Practices in an Anti-global Society: Navigating in a Nationalist Regime

Abstract

Throughout modern theatre history, global practices, ranging from Asian theatre traditions to Stanislavski’s System to Postcolonial African Playwrights, have played a continuing role in the growth of the field. With the rise in right-leaning nationalistic governments in recent years, how does theatre, as a representative of all art fields, continue to champion a world-wide interchange of ideas while navigating the potential minefield that is not only the power-that-be, but the mindset of a constantly evolving audience?
