Abstract
Chinese ethnic minority film is a unique genre but treated as unseparated from the broader frame of Chinese cinema. Due to a ‘one size fits all’ approach, variously geo-cultural regionalities, can be ignored. So too are the regional-cultural features to filmmaking as well. In this presentation, I will analyze minority-centered films/docu-fictions produced after the 2000s in southwest China. By analyzing the different discourses and gestures, specific plots, and cinematic languages, I will explore the regional particularities of the SW China regions, with a highlight on the Yuanshengtai approach. I will use an ethnographic concept, the “ethno-fiction,” to analyize Chinese minority filmmaking in the new era.
