Abstract

In order to promote an understanding of the persistent problem of gender inequity in postsecondary education institutions, this article focuses on the United States, the European Union, and Brazil, three major geopolitical areas that together contain approximately 18 percent of the world’s population. First, it presents data associated with the current state of gender in education around the world. For each region, the article analyzes gender representation in the leadership of higher education, among students at various levels, and across disciplines. Second, in order to illuminate international patterns, it reviews how gender takes shape in policy and practice in the three regions reviewed in this article. Finally, the article addresses the question: How will we know when we have achieved gender equity? In other words, what are the essential components of gender equity in postsecondary education?
