Abstract

The purpose of this article is to identify the differences between state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private organizations in terms of change situations by analyzing the impact of employees’ willingness to change, which has different impacts on operations for both SOEs and private organizations. Data were collected from nineteen in-depth interviews with employees from all levels who had recently gone through mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in Thailand. Willingness to change was investigated based on content analysis of the qualitative data. The results show that SOEs and private organizations handle change differently. Change in SOEs has a more negative effect on employees, who convey lower willingness to change due to lower communication effectiveness and greater hierarchy than those within private organizations. The main contribution of this article is an insightful comparison of the willingness to change between SOEs and private organizations that can lead SOEs and private organizations to successful change situations. This study can be used to guide operational change management in both SOEs and private organizations.
