Abstract

The environmental effects of consumption are seen in most aspects of modern daily life. Artists who are concerned about sustainability of their practice use up-cycled materials, not only to create works that challenge consumer society, but also to educate people about environmental issues. The sustainable art movement comes in many forms and presents a highly innovative vehicle to communicate about social and environmental issues across diverse cultures in multicultural communities around the world. Drawing on “Actor Network Theory,” this work highlights the challenges in how artists and filmmakers seek to shift communication about social and environmental issues through their practice on a local and international level.
