Abstract

Creativity is considered one of the essential skills of designers. The similarity among most of the proposed definitions of creativity is the combinational nature and novelty. Yet, what process the human brain undergoes to combine information and reach a novel composition is a matter that requires reflection. Here, we assumed that creativity is the outcome of a process consisting of a set of various factors. Identification of these factors and the exploration of their relations was the aim of this research. This qualitative research was carried out using grounded theory, and in order to seek experts’ opinions, forty-five professors and architects were interviewed. The findings were presented as six core components in axial coding: The main phenomenon, causal conditions, intervening conditions, contextual conditions, strategies, and consequence. Therefore, a model was obtained that provides categories and subcategories influential in the creative problem solving and the necessary conditions for being creative. The result can be of value in creativity-oriented education for designers and architects.
