Abstract

The types of motivations, constraints, and barriers affecting youth participation in nature-based outdoor recreation are researched in this study. Participants represent underprivileged youth affiliated with a free drop-in after-school youth program. Guided by the Constraints Negotiation Theory and following previous leisure and recreation research on perceived motivations, barriers, and constraints, this study utilizes qualitative data collection techniques. The results reveal sets of common motivations and constraints affecting these youths’ participation in nature-based outdoor recreation. This information will help public and private local and regional organizations provide more culturally aware nature-based outdoor recreation opportunities for youth and their families.
