Abstract

This study explores socio-spatial inequality and social sustainability in relation to the coexistence of rich and poor people in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area. It presents theoretical and methodological tools coming from social representations (SR) and Social Identity approaches. Towards the end of the paper we show the methodology used in this study, including the context of the study and the research instrument utilized. We try to explain the cognitive structure of urban space and the significant elements of representations. We argue, on one hand, that social representations are linked to the urban structure with a symbolic base, and, on the other hand, that social representations associated with the tranquility of a place affect people’s choice to live in places like gated communities that boast protection or social distinction. Moreover, there are negative representations between neighborhoods, condensing social relations and prejudice. However, there are elements to promote relations toward social sustainability.
