Abstract

Structure has not only a technical face and identity but includes many other factors. Any systematic design of space or building results in integrating architecture and its structure into the surrounding environment. Engineers should consider the structure as a product of a rational and conceptual process. Like architecture, structures affect how places are created, which is why their systematic analysis and assessment help interpret placemaking. This study further explores this important point, and two essential views of structures and placemaking are reviewed and analyzed, resulting in potential design codes. This study also revisits a few case studies with specific design implications. To sum up, aesthetics and vitality represent two influential patterns towards creating what can be called structural placemaking.
