Abstract

This article reports on a community-based arts activism and research project designed to deepen understanding about ageism and reduce its impact across generations and increase undergraduate social work students’ interest in fields of gerontology and geriatrics. Additional goals included building community capacity and social connectedness across generations in the Bronx in New York to support a growing population of diverse adults over sixty-five. Adopting an evidence-based practice, photovoice, the project consisted of a collaboration between two disciplines, social work, and digital arts. Faculty guiding the project both teach in a four-year, first-generation college-student and minority-student-serving institution in the Bronx. The project combined images, words, research, and advocacy, culminating in multimodal presentations by participants in community venues and a traveling photography exhibit. Ultimately, it aimed to reduce knowledge and service gaps affecting aging urban communities such as the Bronx.
