Abstract

The concept of social sustainability has gained prominence recently after the successive crises, economic or political in nature, of the corporate world. While a true willingness towards the adoption of social sustainability is noted and is worth encouraging, it largely remains difficult to judge whether corporations or countries are “doing [social sustainability] right.” Indeed, the implementation is unstructured at its best or purely haphazard at worst. In this regard, it becomes extremely difficult to determine whether the basic tenets of social sustainability are being implemented by all and whether over time, there is improvement or regression. This paper attempts to address this issue by proposing a unified model, the “Social Sustainability 100 Index” or SOCI00 Index based on the available literature on the subject. The primary goal is towards harmonising main aspects of social sustainability and providing a measurement which is easy to use and allows internal and external comparison for benchmarking purposes.
