Abstract

In spite of the fact that technological appliances and supplies are needed for life and despite the benefits that these technologies have for human beings, they have always caused some concerns. In the realm of architecture, the fear of dominating technology over humanity in the future and the formation of architecture for technology in accordance with its criteria are matters of concern. The question is, what type of relations everyday technologies establish with humans and how do they affect the shape of spaces? To answer this question, the idea of Marshal McLuhan was used. He believes that technology is an extension of the human body. This idea led to the formation of some hypotheses that were explicated using the theoretical foundations of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty with a logical reasoning method. By arranging a set of propositions and finding implications for their correctness within the afore-said philosophical systems, the correctness of the hypotheses was confirmed. The result of this research is: Technologies are an extension of human existence. They encompass man in the form of layers whose core is the human body. These technologies play a decisive role in the formation of the next layer as part of the human body.
